…given that some, notably USDAW, have supported and even called for repressive measures against immigrants in various categories and the use of ID cards in this context. This is an issue people need to be taking up within their unions where relevant, given that they are not obvious defenders of the rights of their non-members to work. However, the support of ordinary trades unionists for asylum seeker and migrant rights to be here, to stay here freely and to work here, as well as the huge amounts of practical support they give as local activists, has been vital in this struggle so far and will continue to be so.
