Breaking Borders event - 9th July 2010

BREAKING BORDERS – Live Music and Arts Performance Night FRIDAY JULY 9TH, 8pm till 12am at The Polish Centre, 2 Sherwood Rise, Nottingham with bar open late, food available.

Includes eclectic music and poetry from many parts of the world. Visual artists will have works on display and some live demonstrations! Stalls about different issues.

UK Borders Agency office doors locked up in Derby as part of Week of Action against deportation

The UK Border Agency offices in Derby were reported ‘d-locked’ on the night of 2nd/3rd June 2010.

No Borders South Wales dropped some banners in the city of Cardiff. The UKBA there are currently having to carry out a internal investigation into racism there.

At its main offices in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire on 3rd June, travel agents Carlson Wagonlit Travel were awarded ‘Deportation Profiteer of the Year’ title for their major role in booking seats on deportation flights. Campaigners from the Stop Deportation Network presented the company with the ‘award’

Protests were part of a European Week of Action Against the Deportation Machine, from 1st to 6th June 2010.

There will be a Mass demo against deportations in Parliament Square this Saturday in London, 5th June, 2-4pm. This will be followed by a solidarity evening with Kurdish and Iraqi refugees, organised by the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees @ the Ringcross Community Centre (60 Lough Rd, N7 6RH) from 6-11pm. No Borders Nottingham info-nights

As advertised on Notts Indymedia, No Borders Nottingham held the first in series of info-nights on Wed. 19 May, 7pm, at the Sumac Centre. The first info-night was on Detention and Deportation. The next info-night is on June 23rd on Capitalism and Migration, venue details to be announced.

In preparation for the Brussels No Borders Camp in September, Nottingham No Borders is holding a series of info nights as an introduction into the topics that will be discussed at the camp. With films, food, and lots of interesting discussion, we hope to create an informal and open space for those who may be new to the politics of No Borders as well as those who would like the chance to delve more deeply into the details of the UK and European border regime and how it can be challenged.

Detention and Deportation
Wednesday 19 May, 7pm, Sumac Centre

The system of detention and deportation is one of the main ways in which the state attempts to control migration and violently curtail people’s freedom to move. What can we do to work in solidarity with those in detention? How do we challenge the private companies that make a profit from running detention centres and forcibly removing people? Is there a wider battle to be fought against the prison system as a whole?

No Borders Nottingham

No Borders is an activist network that supports Freedom of Movement and the Right to Remain for all. The network links No Borders groups across the UK and there are transnational ties to groups on the continent of Europe and across its borders. The No Borders group in Nottingham includes many local activists who are involved with supporting and working alongside asylum seekers who live in the area, detainees wherever they are, migrants in the squats and on the streets in Calais and supporting solidarity between domestic and migrant workers.

Small World Cafe : Food and Film ‘Moving to Mars’- Thurs 29th April 2010

This week, Thurs 29th April 2010, Small World Cafe have a fund-raiser for Nottingham City of Sanctuary. Iranian volunteers from Nottingham Refugee Forum are cooking the food, which will be served at 7pm (for recommended donation £4/£5). This is followed by the film Moving to Mars at 8pm Recommend donation for food. As usual SMC is at The Square Centre, Alfred St. North just off the top of Huntington St. Nottingham. No Borders at Nottingham MAYDAY 2010

Meet No Borders activists and find literature on our stall at the annual Mayday celebrations in Nottingham on 1st May 2010, this year moved to Victoria Park, Bath Street – near the Victoria Leisure Centre (which the City Council has just closed) and near Sneinton Market. Assemble at 11 am. There will be a march leaving Victoria Park at 12 for Speaker’s Corner (Clough statue), returning to Victoria Park for music, stalls, speakers and more. Nottingham 8th April: ‘Who wants to be a Zimbabwean Trillionaire?’ UK Citizenship Test!

Come to the Square Centre on 8th April 2010 and take part in the ‘Who wants to be a Zimbabwean Trillionaire’ UK Citizenship Test, first prize 100 Trillion Zimbabwean dollars. Food is at 7pm, Quiz at 8pm.
Like last year’s ‘Who wants to be a Zimbabwean Billionare’ the quiz is based on the UK Citizenship Test. Find whether you are suitable for living in UK. Small World Cafe ‘Algerian Night’ at the Square Centre, Nottingham – March 18th

Small World Cafe invites you to “Algerian Night” food and film evening on Thursday, March 18th at 7:00pm at:
The Square Centre, Alfred Street North (near top of Huntingdon Street), Nottingham, NG3 1AA.They will be serving traditional Algerian food including a vegan option from 7pm (recommended donation £4 vegan / £5 meat) , and the tea and coffee bar will be serving a range of teas and refreshments from 50p. Film ‘Battle of Algiers’ starts around 8pm. The previous Afghan and Mongolian nights have been a great success so get there early if you want food.

Nawroz New Year Party in Nottingham – Sunday 21st March 2010

This year’s Nawroz (New years Celebrated in Kurdistan, Iran and Afghanistan) New Year Party is being organised by Nottingham Refugee Forum’s ‘Tuesday Night Project’ but it’s not on Tuesday. It’s on Sunday 21st March from 5.30pm at The Pakistan Centre, 163 Woodborough Road, Nottingham. The night will include live music & delicious food from Afghanistan Iran & Kurdistan.
