Remembering Masivi Olido

Remembering Masivi OlidoNottingham No Borders is sad and angry ? very angry – to have to report the death of Masivi Olido. We are proud to have demonstrated side by side with him for the rights of asylum seekers and to raise awareness in Nottingham of the situation faced by Congolese people that the British state is trying to deport. Too many people are dying in this system, through neglect and worse. In Masivi’s case, very few of us even knew he was ill. We knew him as a fighter. There are questions to be answered here, but in the short term the Congolese community is looking to dignify his memory and help his family a little, so we hope people visiting our site will give a little money and circulate this appeal. Look out for his picture in our random gallery and remember him with us.

URGENT FINANCIAL APPEAL TOWARDS THE FUNERAL COSTS OF MASIVI OLIDO WHO DIED SUDDENLY ON SATURDAY 9TH AUGUST 2008

Let’s dignify MASIVI OLIDO and do good deed as he did for many people. MASIVI OLIDO, a 36 year old young man with a big heart full of compassion died suddenly on Saturday 9th August. Masivi was an active member of the Nottingham Congolese Community, and a member of MPR, who came to the UK and claimed asylum when the Mobutu regime was replaced by Kabila and Rwandan rebel forces in wars that have made the DR Congo one of the most dangerous places on earth. The Home Office sent him to Nottingham in 2001 where he lived until his last hour.

At the moment we need to make sure we have enough funds to bury him in a dignified way. He will be buried according to his cultural tradition. He must look smart as he always used to be.

We need to raise enough funds for this to happen. The funeral costs are estimated to be more than £2,500 We also need to make a one-off donation to his two children, his wife and his elderly mother.

Please click on ‘read more’ to find out more and how to donate to the appeal.

Protest to British Airways against Hicham Yezza removal! – model letter available online

Protest to British Airways against Hicham Yezza removal! - model letter available onlineNottingham University’s Hicham Yezza is due for removal on flight BA894 from Heathrow T5, destination Algiers, at 9.45am this Sunday, June 1st. A model letter for protesting to British Airways demanding they refuse to carry him is available at:
http://freehichamyezza.wordpress.com/. It can be modified as you wish. Address/fax details follow the letter. BA can refuse to carry Hicham. They have a choice. They must be made to take the right decision.

The university should be ashamed at its disregard for an innocent employee caught up the mess they have created by going along with the government’s Stasi-like ‘anti-terror’ procedures.

National Day of Action – Saturday 19th May

On Saturday 19/5/07 there will be a National Day of Action on Asylum Rights. No Borders Nottingham will be in the Market Square from 3.00pm with a stall and banners. Please come along to support us in raising public awareness about asylum issues. The last two demos in the Square, which have focussed on the situation faced by the Congolese, have been big, lively and uplifting and got a good reaction from the public. It would be great to have that sort of atmosphere again, where we celebrate the world we want to see as well as protesting about the one we have. All welcome… See you there!

Check out indymedia for reports from Nottingham, Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow & Birmingham/Coventry…

Nottingham’s Mayday links migration issues & class struggle

A good sized Mayday march and rally was had in Nottingham on 5th May 2007. Organised by the Nottingham and Notts Refugee Forum, and with No Borders and ‘solidarity with asylum seekers’ banners prominent, together with many placards welcoming and supporting asylum seekers, the issues of class struggle and migration were firmly linked. The rally was supported by many local asylum seekers and refugees, boosting numbers to around 100 people.

Somehow the No Borders Nottingham banner even ended up on a international list of Mayday demos , between reports from Nigeria and Oaxaca in Mexico!
It has to be said that Mayday action in cities like Jakarta and Zurich was a bit more impressive – we’ll have to draw inspiration from this and try harder next time!

7th May Bank Holiday March and Rally for Migrant Rights, London

The demo calls for ‘Regularisation for all migrants: No one is illegal’. It is called by the coalition of migrant rights activists, trade unionists, and social justice activists, who organised the national march in London on 7th October 2006. They are calling for another demonstration on Monday May 7th. It assembles at 11am at Westminster Cathedral near Victoria Station. No Borders supports the right and opportunity of all migrants to work. The involvement of trade unions at national level is interesting, however,…

Hundreds of asylum seekers give testimony about UK’s inhumane system

As part of the publication of a report by the Independent Asylum Commission http://www.independentasylumcommission.org.uk/ about the UK asylum system (mentioned on BBC Radio yesterday morning but then dropped), the experiences of hundreds of asylum seekers going through our hellish immigration system were recorded.

Hearings from across the UK were videoed. These can be watched on Human Rights TV http://www.humanrightstv.com/channel/7 and some are presented in the BBC news article Asylum seekers tell their stories http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7314708.stm.

The IAC report warned that a “culture of disbelief” was leading to “perverse and unjust decisions”, and concluded overall that the treatment of asylum seekers fell “seriously below the standards to be expected of a humane and civilised society”. Proving that this culture of disbelief is alive and well, the Border and Immigration Agency rejected the report, claiming it operates a “firm but humane” system. No BNP ‘Red, white and blue’ festival campaign

The anti-immigrant British National Party aim to hold their annual ‘Red, white & blue festival’ for the second time in the East Midlands this summer. It was held in Kimberley in 2007, and the local council allowed it to go ahead in spite of intense local opposition by residents. A campaign has been launched to stop this taking place again: http://nobnpfestival.wordpress.com/

The BNP spread much fear and hatred aimed at asylum seeker and refugees. Download the campaign leaflet Stop the Fascist Red, White and Blue Festival 2008 [attachment=11]
