The Human Rights Law Centre at the University of Nottingham presents the last in their series:
Film: “In This World”. Screening: Wed 26th March, Broadway Cinema @ 5.30pm
Winner of the Golden Bear, the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and the Peace Film Prize at the 2003 Berlin International Film Festival, Michael Winterbottom’s ‘In This World’ tells the story of two Afghan cousins who embark on a refugee’s clandestine odyssey from Pakistan to London during the American bombings in Afghanistan. Armed with a script informed by the actual experiences of refugees and shot on location in 6 countries with digital video and a non-professional cast, ‘In This World’ harnesses the immediacy of non-fiction techniques to create an urgent, intimate account of human beings driven by the fundamental urge to create a better life. The film will be introduced by human rights lawyer and practitioner Deirdre Sheahan (Paragon Law) who works almost exclusively on migrations issues.

No BNP ‘Red, white and blue’ festival campaign
The anti-immigrant British National Party aim to hold their annual ‘Red, white & blue festival’ for the second time in the East Midlands this summer. It was held in Kimberley in 2007, and the local council allowed it to go ahead in spite of intense local opposition by residents. A campaign has been launched to stop this taking place again: http://nobnpfestival.wordpress.com/
The BNP spread much fear and hatred aimed at asylum seeker and refugees. Download the campaign leaflet Stop the Fascist Red, White and Blue Festival 2008 [attachment=11]

Mauritian deported after Home Office dirty trick
Well the Home Office ‘Border & Immigration Agency’ struck again and deported a young Mauritian last week. They did the dirty when they invited him for interview in London (Croydon’s immigration HQ), then picked him up the night before in the accommodation they’d provided. Detention then deportation quickly followed. All we can say (apart from b@st$%ds) is good luck K, and hopefully see you again soon!

Friends of Amdami Juma vow to continue fight for his Indefinite Leave to Remain in UK
Following Amdami Juma’s asylum & immigration tribunal hearing on 28th November, he has now received the result from the Home Office, and we are unhappy to report that his appeal against the decision to deny Indefinite Leave to Remain has not been successful, despite him having made his home in Nottingham as a refugee for nearly 5 years, and after huge support from the local community in Nottingham and elsewhere.
Friends of Amdami Juma vow to continue supporting Amdani’s struggle not to be forced to return to Burundi. For more information please contact Rob Peutrell 078 4676 5761.

Jane Mary Mutetsi detained but later freed
Report from Nottingham and Notts Refugee Forum
The season of peace and goodwill has once again passed by the home office and its immigration myrmidons completely. For them, it’s peace and goodwill to all except asylum seekers. Jane Mary Mutetsi was detained while signing at Loughborough on Thursday 13th Dec 2007 and was then transferred to Yarlswood detention centre with a removal date of Tuesday, 18th December at 21.05 hours. But we are relieved to report that her removal has been stopped following an injunction application to the High Court. The matter will now need to be considered again by the High Court at a permission hearing in respect of the Judicial Review application. Anyway, Jane Mary was returned to Yarlswood on Wednesday morning, then released and came back to Nottingham by train. More Details about Jane Mary Mutetsi’s detention.
Note: NNRF has an annual christmas appeal for cash to support destitute asylum seekers – go to their website for details.
